Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance

Ammonia is the primary building block of nitrogen fertilizer, and its production is one of the largest sources of emissions in fertilizer manufacturing. Nitrogen fertilizers generate an estimated 1.31 gigatons of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually, with approximately 40% of those emissions originating from fertilizer production.

Green ammonia, produced using renewable electricity and water rather than natural gas, can eliminate nearly all emissions from the ammonia production process, but has proven difficult to scale: dozens of projects have been announced around the world, yet many still lack the bankable demand needed to move from announcement to implementation. Compounding the challenge, food and beverage companies sit five to six steps downstream from ammonia producers. This makes connecting the buyers most eager to address fertilizer emissions with the projects that need their demand especially challenging.

GMA, in partnership with RMI and 3Degrees, has launched the Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance (GABA), an initiative that aggregates demand from food and beverage companies to help close this gap. Through a book-and-claim system, GABA members purchase Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) directly from verified green ammonia producers. Buyers gain a pathway to address fertilizer-related Scope 3 emissions that would otherwise sit out of reach, while producers receive the revenue certainty needed to bring new projects online.

Request for Proposals

GABA will publish a Request for Proposals (RFP) in Q4 2026, inviting green ammonia producers and project developers to bid into the alliance’s first collective procurement. Through the RFP, suppliers will compete to provide Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) to participating GABA members, creating one of the first aggregated demand signals for green ammonia-based fertilizer.

Join GABA

Membership in GABA is open to food and beverage companies and other organizations seeking to address fertilizer-related Scope 3 emissions through collective procurement. GABA enables companies at different stages of their sustainability journeys to participate in a common demand signal for green ammonia while reducing transaction costs and accelerating market growth.

In Partnership With

The Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) and RMI are preparing to run a pilot procurement for Scope 3 environmental attributes from low-emission products in the nitrogen fertilizer value chain. This pilot procurement intends to aggregate demand from member companies – ambitious Scope 3 fertilizer buyers – and will generate an economic incentive for suppliers to accelerate the deployment of decarbonization technologies relevant to fertilizer production. This pilot will utilize a book and claim framework to structure offtake agreements for the environmental attributes of low-emission fertilizer products, between downstream buyers seeking to address Scope 3 emissions and suppliers of low-emission fertilizer products. In this book-and-claim system, Scope 3 buyers will receive the right to claim environmental attribute certificates (EACs) from decarbonized fertilizer products toward their climate targets. In return, suppliers of low-emission fertilizer products will receive revenue from the sale of EACs to cover the premium associated with producing low-emission fertilizer. This RFI will be used to profile the spectrum of available low-emission fertilizer solutions in the market and identify providers who can engage with our buyers to enable offtakes in the next 12-18 months. This information, which is anonymized and presented to buyers at the technology level, helps inform buyer criteria for their future purchase of EACs. Early participation from suppliers can increase the likelihood that your solution is actively considered for inclusion in the buying criteria used for this pilot. This RFI is specifically seeking information on products that address emissions from the nitrogen fertilizer value chain, including ammonia production, nitric acid production, and other low-emission fertilizer synthesis processes. Responses must be submitted using the form linked within the RFI document.

The deadline for responses is Friday, March 27, 2026.
